Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces
Wisconsin winters are long, which means the weeks you actually get to sit outside matter. A well-built fire pit or outdoor fireplace extends that season into spring and fall, and in Southern Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw climate, how it’s built underneath determines whether it lasts a season or a decade. Martinez Landscaping installs fire pits and outdoor fireplaces with proper base prep and drainage so your investment holds up through Oconomowoc winters without cracking or shifting.
- Custom design in natural stone, brick, or concrete block to match your existing patio or landscape
- Proper frost-depth base excavation and gravel drainage layer to prevent heaving through Wisconsin freeze-thaw cycles
- Gas line coordination available for propane or natural gas fire pit inserts (we work with your gas contractor)
- Wood-burning fire pit and full outdoor fireplace builds, including seating walls integrated around the fire feature
- All work done by Martinez crew members directly, no subcontractors on site
- Free written estimate that details materials, dimensions, and scope before any work begins
How It Works
Our Process for Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces
On-site estimate
We visit your property, look at the grade, drainage, and how the space is used, then give you a written estimate with material options and dimensions. No surprises on cost.
Design and material selection
You choose the stone or block style, fire feature type (wood-burning pit, gas insert, or full fireplace structure), and whether you want integrated seating walls. We finalize the plan before scheduling.
Base prep and installation
We excavate to below frost depth, set a compacted gravel base for drainage, and build up from there. This is the step most DIY and budget installs skip, and it’s why those crack within a few years.
Cleanup and walkthrough
We haul off excavation material and debris, clean up the site, and walk you through curing time for mortar joints and any care notes specific to your materials.

Common Questions
FAQ: Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces
Wisconsin’s frost line sits around 48 inches in most of Southern Wisconsin, but for a fire pit or fireplace we typically excavate 12-18 inches and fill with compacted gravel to give water a place to drain rather than freeze and expand under your structure. Skipping this step is the main reason backyard fire pits crack and shift after a few winters.
It depends on what the patio is made of and how it was built. Concrete slabs often work as a base with modifications, but pavers usually need to be pulled in the fire feature footprint and a proper footing poured. We’ll assess this during the estimate visit.
We build the structure for both, and for gas inserts we coordinate the timeline with a licensed gas contractor so the line is run before we close up the base. You hire the gas contractor directly, or we can recommend one we’ve worked with in the Oconomowoc area.
