Mulch Top-Dressing Services in Southern Wisconsin | Martinez Landscaping
Annual mulch refresh that replenishes existing beds, suppresses weeds, and keeps your landscape looking fresh.
Maintenance
Mulch Top-Dressing
Wisconsin winters are hard on mulch beds. By spring, last year’s layer has broken down, shifted, or been buried under debris, leaving roots exposed and weeds ready to take over. A fresh top-dressing of mulch in late spring restores the protective layer your plants need to hold moisture through our dry July and August stretches.
- Existing beds are edged and cleaned out before any mulch is applied — no mulch over dead debris
- We calculate the right depth (typically 2 to 3 inches) so you get weed suppression without smothering plant crowns
- Mulch is kept back from tree trunks and shrub stems to prevent rot, a common mistake on DIY and rushed installs
- We work around perennials and annuals without disturbing root zones or pulling emerging plants
- Material options include shredded hardwood, dyed black or brown, and cedar — we help you pick what fits your existing beds
- Beds are raked level and edges are defined cleanly so the finished look is neat and consistent across your property
How It Works
Our Process for Mulch Top-Dressing
Free written estimate
We walk your beds, measure total square footage, and give you a written quote showing material type, quantity, and labor. No surprises on the invoice.
Bed preparation
Before mulch goes down, we pull visible weeds, remove old clumping mulch if needed, and re-edge bed borders so the fresh layer has a clean boundary.
Mulch application
We spread and rake to your chosen depth, work carefully around plants, and pull mulch back from tree trunks and foundation plantings.
Cleanup and walkthrough
All excess mulch is cleared off sidewalks, driveways, and lawn areas. We do a quick walkthrough with you before we leave to make sure everything looks right.

Common Questions
FAQ: Mulch Top-Dressing
Once a year is typical for most Southern Wisconsin properties. Spring is the most common time, after the ground has thawed and before summer heat arrives, though fall top-dressing works well for beds you want insulated going into winter.
In most cases we top-dress over existing mulch as long as it has not compacted into a thick mat. If the old layer is more than 3 or 4 inches deep or has gone anaerobic, we will remove the excess first so the new material can do its job.
Shredded hardwood is the most common choice around here because it breaks down slowly and locks together well in wind. Cedar is a good pick if you have pest pressure. Dyed mulches hold color longer but cost a bit more — we can show you samples and let you decide.
