Paver Patios & Walkways
Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw cycles are hard on hardscaping, and a paver patio or walkway that isn’t installed with proper base depth and drainage will heave, settle, and look worn within a few years. Martinez Landscaping installs paver patios and walkways using correctly graded compacted gravel bases sized for Southern Wisconsin soil conditions, so the finished surface stays level and drains properly through our winters. From a simple front walkway to a full backyard patio with steps and borders, every project is built by our own crew with no subcontractors involved.
- Gravel base excavated and compacted to the depth required for Wisconsin frost conditions, typically 6-8 inches, before any pavers are set
- Proper slope and drainage planned into every project so water drains away from the house and doesn’t pool on the surface
- Full range of paver styles and colors available including concrete pavers, tumbled pavers, and natural stone options
- Soldier course borders, step installation, and curved edges cut and fit on site for a clean finished look
- Sand-set installation with polymeric jointing sand that locks pavers in place and resists weed growth between joints
- Wisetack financing available with 0% APR options so you don’t have to wait until you’ve saved the full project cost
How It Works
Our Process for Paver Patios & Walkways
Free written estimate
We visit your property, measure the area, discuss paver style and layout options, and give you a written estimate before any work is scheduled. No ballpark quotes over the phone.
Site prep and excavation
We excavate to the correct depth, remove existing grass or surface material, and grade the subbase for drainage before any gravel goes in. This step is where most patio problems start if it’s rushed.
Base installation and paver setting
We compact a gravel base in layers, screed a sand setting bed, and set pavers to the agreed pattern. Borders and cuts are made on site. Steps are set and secured if they’re part of the project.
Jointing and cleanup
We sweep polymeric sand into the joints, compact the surface, and remove all debris and excavated material. We walk the finished project with you before we leave.

Common Questions
FAQ: Paver Patios & Walkways
For our climate, we typically excavate 6 to 8 inches and compact gravel in layers before setting pavers. A shallow base is the most common reason patios heave or settle after a few winters.
We schedule projects once the ground has dried and stabilized enough to compact properly, usually late spring. Installing on saturated soil leads to an uneven base that causes problems later.
A typical backyard patio in the 300 to 500 square foot range takes two to three days from excavation to finished joints. Larger projects with steps or multiple levels take longer and we’ll give you a realistic timeline in the estimate.
